New Media

For the piece of new media which I am exploring this year, I have chosen Adobe Flash Animator CS6.
One of the things I am trying to do with it is learn how to make games. I know from my own extensive online gaming experience that a lot of web games are made with Flash. However, unlike Autodesk programs, Adobe Flash does not seem to have useful tutorials built in. Therefore I have resorted to a lot of exploratory learning (clicking things until something happens) and a lot of Youtube tutorials. Without the videos that others have posted to Youtube, I would be completely lost as to how to proceed. Tutorials such as:

This video not only shows you how to make the game, but also includes the Javascript required for the game to work.

And hopefully this link will work to show the published game. You will need to download the swf file and open it to see.
As that step is not working or is very difficult to get working, I have included some screen shots of the game.
It is a basic platform game which requires you to jump from platform to platform until you reach the goal.

The game has basic gravity resulting in your character (the green pentagon) falling at a set speed.

The game also allows you to jump and move from right to left. Falling off the map results in you being reset to the starting location.

The hard part of this game is that I do not really understand Javascript well, so making the character interact with multiple objects is still a struggle.

  1. It seems that this game will not work without some specialized software. I will try to fix this for the future.
